Spreadfirefox spams

I know this will get me a lot of flak - but I'll still say it - spreadfirefox.com is now a spam site in my books.

  • I've received an email about firefox flicks from "Spread Firefox team"
  • Immediately, I log into spreadfirefox.com to uncheck any checkboxes I might have accidentaly checked allowing them to spam me. Unfortunately, there are none.
  • The 'unsubscribe' link in the mail is pointing to "mozilla.cmail1.com". How reassuring!
  • There's no way to cancel my spreadfirefox account. (Or atleast I can't spot one from "My Account")
  • Action Items: Let Gmail know this was spam, and blog about this hoping someone would care.

I've always been a skeptic of automatic updates, and have them turned off by default. During Firefox 1.0 timeframe, I had downloaded each one of 1.0 - 1.0.7. However, the update from 1.5 to 1.5.0.1 was flawless.

Adblock is back, and packs more punch than before!

A new official build (0.5 d3 nightly 40) of adblock is available at adblock.mozdev.org. This version is compatible with Firefox 1.5, and sports a new trick: it blocks ajax. This means you can use adblock to disable Gmail ads. Here's the filter you can use:

Upgrading to Firefox 1.5 Beta - Take two!

Yesterday, I had upgraded to Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 on my main machine, with Profile Backup and adblock hacks. Today I tried a direct upgrade on another machien without any manual hacks.

My Steps:
  • Download Firefox 1.5 Beta 1, install it over 1.0.5
  • Start Firefox
  • It warns that Quicknote is not compatible - disable it
  • Everything else is perfect. Adblock was automatically deemed compatible!

Now, the other part about making quicknote compatible:

  • Download from http://mozilla.doslash.org/stuff/quicknote-dev.xpi
  • Extract the xpi using 7-zip, bump up maxversion, drop the modified install.rdf into 7-zip.
  • Voila, quicknote-dev.xpi is now compatible!

Again - no problems so far!

Upgrading to Firefox 1.5 Beta 1

Its time to upgrade! I've been using Firefox 1.0.x since forever.

My Steps:
  • Backup profile
  • Modify %APPDATA%/mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini to point to a new default profile (empty folder)
  • Install Firefox 1.5 Beta 1, run it once
  • Exit Firefox, the new profile is now populated
  • Copy over the following files from old profile to new
    • bookmarks.html
    • cert8.db, secmod.db, key3.db, signons.txt
    • cookies.txt, hostperm.1
    • mimetypes.rdf
    • user.js, prefs.js
  • Download fixed adblock
  • Open Firefox, drag and drop the xpi

No problems so far.

Fixed!

Back in feb 2004, I had written about what was the most insane bugfix ever, in my opinion.

Bug 150099 had changed the behavior of close-tab to hide the last open tab, instead of closing it. Bug 156082 was reported to have the insanity reverted, but never got fixed. Someone even came up with an extension to replace the last open tab with about:blank when closed.

Okay, enough of history. This was fixed for firefox via bug 248987. Thanks to mconnor for checking it in.

In short: firefox rocks, seamonkey sucks!

Google loves firefox

Blogger Browser Matrix
Usage Breakdown:

* 71% of our users use IE6/Windows; clearly the majority yet a lower percentage than the web in general.
* 6% use Mozilla Firefox; an up-and-comer, which we all use internally.
* 3% use Safari; also widely used internally.
* 2% use AOL

AOL users, as well as those unaccounted for here (Netscape, Opera, etc.), would be wise to use Mozilla Firefox in order to have the best possible experience using Blogger.

System requirements for gmail
# Microsoft IE 5.5 and newer (Windows)
# Netscape 7.1 and newer (Windows, Macintosh, Linux)
# Mozilla 1.4 and newer (Windows, Macintosh, Linux)
# Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and newer (Windows, Macintosh, Linux)
# Safari 1.2.1 and newer (Macintosh)

Comparing Winstripe and Qute

Now that the whining over the new theme has subsided, the designers working on winstripe must be getting a breather.

I'm not much of an artist, and dont care about visual appeal much, but there's definitely room for improvement from a usablity perspective.

a) The line between menu bar and icons should be removed
b) A separator should be added between tab bar and document
c) Icon bar should be smaller in width
d) Arrows would look better than triangles for back/forward buttons.

Why the average user won't switch

Originally posted as a comment on Adot's notblog
Asa wonders how people can continue to use IE, and one of the comments says if everyone was forced to spend 10min. with firefox, 95% of users will switch.

Actually, 10min with firefox wont make 95% of users switch. It'll probably make only 5% switch.

If you read San Jose Mercury News, there was a full page article on alternative browsers. Granted, the author is dumb enough to believe that being open source is mozilla's major shortcoming. However he does make a valid point:

Quote:

I'm comfortable with IE and the relatively small benefits of switching to opera aren't enough to overcome my inertia.

Link to article
That's the killer. For most users, the benefits on switching to an alternative browser are minimal.

Reason? Google toolbar does popup blocking. Most sites work well with IE. They've never used tabbed browsing. Firefox does NOT block ads out-of-the-box. It does NOT play flash/java out-of-the-box.

What is needed is a marketing strategy. It should include a 'distribution' with all the useful extras bundled.

I personally consider adblock to be one of the killer features of firefox. Its insanely powerful, and insanely underrated. It is easier to use than usercontent.css blocking and more powerful. Not to mention that usercontent.css hacks are 'geeky'. If there is one extension that must be built into firefox, then adblock it is.

Q: Will Version 2 be a collection of independent applications (Firebird, Thunderbird, etc.) or an Integrated suite?

A: Our preliminary thinking on this is that 2.0 is really a version number for the core gecko components, and a collection of many applications that are built on top of it. Those applications would likely include the latest update to the Integrated Suite, Firebird, Thunderbird, and many more.

Time to speak up

There's been renewed debate recently on Firebird Vs Seamonkey. Its time for the user community to speak up.

I do not understand why Seamonkey isnt dead already. It seems that mozilla drivers took the decision that the birds will replace the monkey, but were not proactive about implementing it. If they were, mozilla 1.5 would have been delayed by a few months, but would have shipped with the birds as the frontend.

Here's a old management story: A professor in a reputed management school was demonstrating something in the class. He opened a jar, and placed some big rocks in it until the brim. He then asked his students - "Is the jar full?". The answer was a chorus "YES". He then pulled out some small rocks from his drawer, and filled them in. Again he asked "Is the jar full?". His students were smart - they answered "No". Now he pulled out very small pebbles and sand, and packed the jar, and then asked the students - "Whats the moral of the story?"

One smart student replied - "No matter how packed your schedule is, you can always squeeze in more time". "No", answered the professor. "The moral is - If you dont place the big rocks first, you'll never be able to place them".

Therefore, I beg you, mozilla drivers, get the big rocks in first. Make the switch to the birds NOW! Delay 1.6 as much as needed, but do not ship it with the monkey.

Another (selfish) concern I have seen across various blogs is that many (so called) independant developers do not like the new end user focus. They want mozilla to remain a secret from Joe Sixpack. They just want a browser for themselves, not for the general public. Therefore I implore you, readers, to speak up. Show the world that the whiners are in minority. Show them that the public is waiting for the birds.

Ad-blocking

I use firebird without extensions, so can't comment on how well the adblock and nuke image stuff works.
There's this usercontest.css adblock scheme that sounded nifty, but i never tried so far.
I took the plunge today.
In one word - wow!
So far, I was blocking images using right click -> block images from this server. No more! That method just didnt show the images. The empty clickable space was still there. The usercontent.css scheme is simply magical.. you've got to try it to notice the difference. Also remember to see a popular website (say yahoo.com) both with and without this.. you just might end up taking adblock for granted once it's in...

Firebird

Phoenix is a web browser from mozilla.org. Its a pretty decent one, as good if not better than Opera and much better than internet explorer

A few days back, mozilla.org renamed Phoenix to Firebird . What should have been a welcome change to avoid name conflict with a browser from phoenix technologies , turned out to be nightmare, thanks to Firebird database users, who were so pissed off with the announcement that they took to spamming mozillazine forums. There can be only two reasons they reacted in the manner they did:

1. They were really concerned about losing their google ranking
2. They wanted some free publicity
